BACK IN THE WORLD OF Colors, I’m still sitting by the water next to the canoe. Breathing hard and not knowing why. A tickle of being out of control makes my heart flutter faster for a moment and then it’s gone.

I stand up and look around. The “map” is gone as well as the case. Thinking about them still makes me laugh. All feelings that came with me gone.

I’m excited to try out something I built myself. I drag the canoe until it’s in the water. Then I push. I jump into the canoe while pushing off the shore. It doesn’t take long for the current to catch it and I’m soon pulled down the stream. I look around frantically at the inside of the canoe expecting a leak or two, but no water makes its way in. That makes me proud.

After just floating for a bit something strikes the canoe, almost making it tip over. I quickly pull out the wooden object before the canoe floats past it. It’s a stick with a flat end that was stuck into the ground beneath the water. It will work perfectly for a paddle.

The further I go, the wider and deeper the stream becomes. Until it’s more the size of a river. It’s getting rougher and harder to keep the canoe steady and upright. In control. Around a bend, my heart begins hammering harder in my chest. The river ahead is flowing hard and fast. There are rapids and drop-offs. I’m scared, but It’s too late to get out now, so I brace myself as best as I can. The first rapid picks the canoe up and throws it, causing me to bounce hard enough to bruise my bottom. I’m thrown left and right and then before I know what’s happening, I’m flying through the air, landing hard on my shoulder against the surface of the water. I go under. I don’t even know what happened, but my lungs do! I need air! My eyes are open, but all I can see is bubbles and water throwing me around. I’m confused and my chest is starting to hurt. My feet brush the rocky bottom and I push off, bringing my head back toward the light. Back towards the air above the water. I shoot straight up and pull in a breath as I feel rather than see that I’m above. I catch a glimpse of the canoe before going back under. I kick my feet again to bring myself above the surface and swim as hard as I can towards the last place I saw the canoe. I see it! I grab onto the edge of it just as another drop-off sucks me and the canoe down. The canoe flips and submerges me once again. I’m forced to let go of the canoe and momentarily underneath it. I thrash my way to the surface again, my lungs aching for air. I’m exhausted and cold. I feel the coldness of the air and breathe in big gulps.
